I finished my first knited scarf more than satisfied with it. And his new owner is even happier. This is not my first handmade scarf. I made two of them before, but crocheted instead. Knitting was a pending challenge for me.

I went on working on [anthurium]. I took pictures of the sewn pieces, and printed them in order to draw some sketches over, looking for ideas to embroider.

I love this first picture, because of my hand. Does it happen to you that you recognise yourself in a picture of a particular part of your body, more than in a picture of your face? This is what happens with my hands, and my rings. I always wear them when I am outside home.

He seguido trabajando en [anthurium]. Les hice fotos a las piezas cosidas y las imprimí, para hacer prácticas de trazos sobre ellas, buscando ideas para bordarles.

Me gusta mucho esta primera imagen, porque sale mi mano. A vosotros no os pasa que os reconocéis mejor en la fotografía de alguna parte del cuerpo en concreto, más que en una de la cara? Eso me pasa a mí con mis manos y mis anillos. Siempre los llevo puestos cuando estoy fuera de casa.

Me encantaría tomarme desayunos como éste más a menudo. Pero mi cuerpo no piensa lo mismo...

Weeks ago an artist and designer whom I admired passed away. He was Isaac Díaz Pardo, one of the founders of the Sargadelos ceramic factory. He was also an intelectual that helped my home country, in Galicia, in the north west of Spain to preserve it's culture against some dark times we lived here in the past century.

The quality of this porcelain is well known here. But what I most love is its original, fresh and timeless design...

In this post at Kunst in Coris you can see some amazing works and colaborations they made with different designers.

One day I'll show you the only piece I have from Sargadelos. More to come in the future, I hope...

As everything seems to be connected, I visited the company in autum with my students. Also, days ago I found a Sargadelos service in La Casita de Wendy's blog. And she is not the one: at Másdelomismo, a kettle and a plate, embellished with the traditional blue.

Hace unas semanas falleció un artista y diseñador que admiro. Isaac Díaz Pardo, uno de los fundadores de la empresa de cerámica de Sargadelos. Fue, sobre todo, un intelectual que ayudó a Galicia a proteger su cultura durante los años oscuros que en el pasado vivimos en España.

La extraordinaria calidad de esta porcelana es bien conocida por aquí. Pero lo que más me gusta a mí es su diseño original, fresco e intemporal. Aunque, lamentablemente, no creo que sea la imagen que le llega al gran público...

Como todo parece estar conectado, este otoño estuve visitando la fábrica con mis alumnos. Y el otro día voy y me encuentro esta vajilla de Sargadelos en el blog de La Casita de Wendy. Aunque no es la única: en la casita de Másdelomismo, una cafetera, y un plato también decorado con el tradicional azul.

Another week begins. Days fly and I feel as if I don't have time to do all I want. I would like days of 48 hours and energy to work most of them.

This beauty is a scissors organizer that a friend of mine gave me as a present this summer. I was amazed, because I didn't know about this kind of object at all. In spanish it is call humming bird. It makes sense, due to the shape of the holes and the scissors points, but I don't know if you call it the same way in english...

Otra semana que empieza. Los días vuelan y siento que no tengo tiempo para hacer todo lo que quiero. Me gustaría que los días tuviesen 48 horas y tener energía para trabajar la mayoría de ellos.

Esta preciosidad es un organizador de tijeras que me regaló una amiga este verano. Me quedé impresionada, porque no conocía este objeto. Se llama picaflor, que es sinónimo de colibrí (tampoco conocía esa palabra, la verdad). Tiene sentido ¿no?, por la forma de os agujeros y las puntas de las tijeras...

The firs picture is from a previous of the piece. I didn't like how the triangles looked so I unsewed them. I don't mind imperfection, but the bulk and the irregulatity in the corners were awful...

light in winter

I usually love autum and winter. If I have one sunny day from time to time, I don't mind gray days. I prefer being inside than outside. I like winter clothes. I like my sofa blanket. But, this year is being tougher than others and I try to get away from greyness strongly.

I take refuge in beauty. In other's point of view. Such us Masdelomismo, with a warm heart who doesn't like winter at all. Or Anna Emilia, who finds warmth among snowed forests.

And I try to pay attention to details at home.

***Normalmente me gustan el otoño y el invierno. Si veo el sol algún día de vez en cuando, no me importan los días grises. Prefiero estar dentro que fuera. Me gusta la ropa de invierno. Adoro la manta de mi sofá. Pero este año está siendo más duro que otros, y trato de escapar de lo gris con fuerza.

Me refugio en la belleza. En los puntos de vista de los otros. Como en Masdelomismo, que tiene un corazón caliente al que no le gusta el invierno. O Anna Emilia, que encuentra el calor en los bosques nevados.

Y trato de prestar atención a los detalles en casa.

Ventilating [anémona] a little, trying to look for inspiration to finish it. I still feel too tired to work in my creations, as I used to do months ago.

These days of no-creativity, I try to pay attention to different sources of inspiration.

I listened to a lecture of La Casita de Wendy at DaisyMarket, Fashion Showroom & Submit, that took place in my town last September (in spanish). La Casita de Wendy's blog is one of my favorites. They always show amazing designs, clothes, paterns...

I found inspiration to change the decoration of my living room walls looking at Moniquilla's work space, in Galletas de Ante's blog.

I had lots of laugh reading these instructions to survive to modern life, from Sexo en Chamberí (in spanish, as well, sorry).

En estos días de no-creatividad, trato de prestar atención a diferentes fuentes de inspiración.

Me escuché la charla de La Casita de Wendy en el DaisyMarket, Fashion Showroom & Submit, que se celebró el pasado septiembre en A Coruña (con los pocos eventos especiales que hay en mi ciudad y encima casi siempre me los pierdo, ahhhh!). El blog de La Casita de Wendy es uno de mis favoritos. Siempre enseñan diseños, prendas, estampados geniales...

Encontré inspiración para cambiar las paredes de mi salón viendo el estudio de Moniquilla en el blog de Galletas de Ante.

Y me partí de risa leyendo las instrucciones para sobrevivir a la vida moderna que nos cuentan en Sexo en Chamberí.

A ver si consigo que me cunda esta semana...!

Do you remember my hyacinths? (not sure about the spelling, I've found different versions...). They have bloomed so quickly and so much, that the stems can't even stand still with the weight of the flowers. As you can see, I have to use wooden sticks, to support them. Have you even seen this?

I've listened to an advice that one of my lovely readers gave me to get out of these creative crisis: do something different. I decided to start knitting. I learn it when I was a child and did it just twice or three times in my life. So, I had to remember it from the basis and even had to buy a pair of knitting needles. The few times I knitted, I borrowed them from my mother. But now I think it was time to have my own.

almazuelas: lola barasoain II

I didn't know exactly what I was looking for. In some way, just see what was happening there. I read that Lola Barasoain started to study almazuelas' tradition in Sierra de Cameros as an anthropologist about the 70's. She worked with the women who lived there, most of them farmers, taught them to sew almazuelas and encouraged them to retrieve the old tradition of using remnants of fabrics to create something new. She doesn't work in the original workshop that she founded anymore, but I thought that, if I were lucky, I could see some of their present works.

But what I could't have imagined was to meet Lola herself. Nowadays, she has a website an you can even know that she lives in the Molino de Sorzano (and ancient watermill) but not at that moment. I had read about her fascinating past life in Paris as a designer and model. How she married and moved to a little village in Sierra de Cameros, in La Rioja, with her husband, to take care of the saints of a hermitage (!). Both of them were concerned about the lost of population of the villages in this place and also worked on its restoration.

So, I was really interested in knowing her, but I didn't even think that it could be possible. I imagined her as a hermit, hating people bothering her with their curiosity. And maybe that's what she thought when we arrived her house (after a phone call from a friend of her...) but she didn't show it at all. On the contrary, I found a very generous woman who wellcame us to her house and gave us her time and knowledge.

The visit was very interesting because it was a pleasure to listen to her. She told me, for example, that many quilts were used in the past to protect the matresses from the bed bases when they were too old to be over the beds. And also because we could visit the little museum she has at home, which was still in progress ath that time, not yet opened to the public, where she studies and exhibits all the pieces she has recovered over the years.

No sabía exactamente lo que estaba buscando. En cierto modo solo saber qué pasaba por allí. Había leído que Lola Barasoain se había mudado a la Sierra de Cameros en los 70, y empezó a estudiar la tradición de las almazuelas como antropóloga. Trabajó con la mujeres que vivían allí, la mayoría agricultoras, les enseñó a coser almazuelas y las animó a recuperar la tradición de usar viejos retales para crear cosas nuevas. Ella ya no trabaja más en el taller que fundó pero pensé que, con suerte, podría ver alguna de las cosas que hacen ahora.

Lo que no me había imaginado era llegar conocer a la propia Lola. En la actualidad, tiene una página web en la que incluso explica cómo llegar a su casa en el antiguo Molino de Sorzano. Pero no en aquella época. Había leído sobre su fascinante vida de joven, en París, como diseñadora y modelo. Cómo se casó y se mudó con su marido a esa recóndita zona de La Rioja, la Sierra de Cameros, para cuidar los santos de una ermita (!). Y cómo se ocuparon de recuperar esos pueblos, intentando que recuperasen población.

Así que estaba muy interesada en conocer a semejante mujer. Pero no me imaginaba que fuera siquiera posible. La imaginaba como una ermitaña, odiando que la gente la fuera a incordiar con su curiosidad... Y quizás fuese eso lo que pensó cuando llegamos a su casa (después de que la llamase un amigo suyo...) pero no fue eso lo que nos demostró. Todo lo contrario, encontré una mujer generosa, que nos recibió en su casa y compartió con nosotros su tiempo y su conocimiento.

La visita fue interesantísima, porque era un placer escucharla. Me contó, por ejemplo, que antiguamente en ocasiones se acababan usando los quilts bajo los colchones, para protejerlos del somier, cuando ya estaban demasiado viejos para ser usados sobre la cama, como colchas. Y también porque pudimos visitar el pequeño museo que tiene en casa, que en aquel momento todavia no estaba abierto al público, en el que estudia y exhibe todas las obras que ha recopilado a lo largo de los años.

Nowadays, she leads workshops where she teaches all that she knows about almazuelas. And she works also in environment education and alternative therapies in this paradise where she lives.

En la actualidad, dirige talleres donde enseña lo que sabe sobre las almazuelas. Y también ofrece programas de educación medioambiental y terapias alternativas en ese paraíso donde vive.

You can't imagine what a surprise for me when, a couple of months ago, I watch her on TV! It's a program from the Spanish Television, where she appears with her family from minute 50' 35'' (it lasts for 5'). I advice you to watch it, even if you don't understand, because she shows some quilts.

It's amazing the connections you find in life...! When I came from my travel I found a post about Lola in one of the blogs I followed, A Ervilha Cor de Rosa. And weeks ago Dumbo, one of my favorite blogs, talked about her, as well.

No os podés imaginar cuál fué mi sorpresa cuando, hace un par de meses la vi en la tele! Es un programa de TV, en el que el tema son sus hijos y en el que ella sale a partir del minuto 50' 35'' (dura 5'). A parte de ver los quilts, a quien le interese, os recomiendo que lo veáis, porque es una persona que merece la pena escuchar, de verdad.

La vida tiene conexiones increíbles...! Cuando regresé del viaje encontré un fantástico post sobre Lola en uno de los blogs que seguía, A Ervilha Cor de Rosa. Y hace unas semanas Dumbo, uno de mis blogs favoritos, también habló de ella.***

This is a post I had in mind for a long time. As many more... So, let's go, little by little. I want tell you a story about patchwork in Spain. As I said before, it's a tradition not very well known here. It's becoming more popular nowadays, due to the new stores, workshops and some shows. But not many people know that this craft come from ancient times. The first evidences we have are from ancient Egypt and China. In our country we also have writen evidences as far back as the XVII century.

I remember having read that years ago, and also that this tradition was not known as 'patchwork' at this time, but 'almazuelas' (a word with an Arabian origin). It seemed that they named it different in other parts of Spain. Doesn't it sound great?. And also that there were groups of women in a place in Spain called La Rioja (famous for their excellent wines) trying to document and retrieve this work.

I knew it, and completely forgot it, until I was travelling through Spain, precisely in La Rioja, in 2009. The story begins when a young waitress pointed to the piece I was working on while relaxing in a cafe and said: 'Oh, you are sewing an almazuela!' And when I asked her what did she know about it, she took me into her house and showed me a really old quilt hanging in a wall, found beneath a mattress when they moved there.

Maybe, if you're not Spanish, and you are used to see old quilts in hanging in museums you won't understand how excited I felt about it! If even a year later, I almost cried when I first visited a quilt exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto...! And how I could't help to follow the paths of the ancient 'almazuelas'...

The heart of it lied in the Cameros Sierra, in the mountains of La Rioja, and lied in a woman who lived there called Lola Barasoain. So, there we went!

Como dije en otra ocasión, no es una tradición demasiado conocida aquí. Se está volviendo cada vez más popular, debido a las tiendas de telas que abren, a las clases y a alguna que otra exposición. Pero no mucha gente sabe que esta artesanía, en la que se trabaja con pequeños retalitos de telas, viene de tiempos muy antiguos. Las primeras evidencias documentadas proceden del Antiguo Egipto y China. Y en España podemos encontrar documentación escrita ya en siglo XVII.

Recuerdo haberlo leído hace unos años. Así como que esta tradición no se conocía como "patchwork" en esa época, sino como "almazuelas" (palabra de origen árabe). En otras partes de España incluso le dan diferentes nombres. ¿No suena fenomenal? Y también que había grupos de mujeres en La Rioja que trataban de documentar y recuperar ese oficio.

Lo sabía y lo olvidé completamente, hasta un viaje que hice por España en 2009, precisamente a La Rioja. La historia comienza cuando una camarera me señaló un trabajito que estaba cosiendo mientras nos tomábamos algo y dijo: "Anda, estás cosiendo una almazuela!" Cuando le pregunté que qué sabía de eso, me llevó a su casa y me enseñó un quilt muy antiguo que tenía colgado, en la pared y que habían encontrado bajo un colchón cuando se mudaron allí.

Los españoles entenderéis bien que no es algo muy habitual encontrar algo así aquí, una obra textil antigua y valiosa, digamos que "puesta en valor", y menos en un pueblo recóndito... ¡Pero si un año después, aún me emocioné al ver una exposición de quilts antiguos en el Royal Ontario Museum de Toronto...! Podréis comprender entonces que no pude evitar seguir las pistas de las antiguas almazuelas! Su centro neurálgico parece que residía en la Sierra de Cameros y en una mujer llamada Lola Barasoain. Así que, allá fuimos!!!

Y creo que con esto ya es suficiente para un lunes por la mañana. Mañana, el final de la historia.

This autum is coming with a lot of energy and new projects in mind. To begin with, do you remember that I told you about the possibility of an exhibition? That's it! Los próximos 10 y 11 de septiembre voy a exponer dos obras, edelweiss y loto, en la Sala de Exposiciones Municipal Palexco, aquí en Coruña. Lo organiza la Asociación Gallega de Patchwork y este año coincide que se celebra en mi ciudad, así que espero que me vengan a ver algunos amigos que siempre me están preguntando que cuándo expongo...

Y además también hay un concurso. No es que sea yo muy fan de las concursos de arte, pero bueno, a ver qué pasa... (aviso a mis amigos y conocidos coruñeses, hay premio especial del público, no digo más...).

The best of coming back home was to find these presents in my mailbox. They are a bundle of naturally-dyed silks, and also a pincushion as a surprise, that Claire, from Clarabella sent me directly from her work room in Yorkshire.

It is a great pleasure to have them with me and be able to touch them at last! I love what Claire does, the colours she gets dying fabrics with different plants, a new world for me. And, of course I love the patchworks she makes with them. The simplicity and, at the same time, the richness of the compositions and textures inspire me each time I read one of the posts in her blog.

Now, I am thinking in different ideas to create a work with them... I don't usually work with valuable fabrics, so, I feel responsability this time. I have to do something to deserve them...

***Lo mejor de volver a casa ha sido encontrar estos regalitos en mi buzón. Son un atadillo de telas de seda tejidas con tintes naturales y también un alfiletero como sorpresa, que Claire, de Clarabella, me envió directamente desde su taller en Yorkshire.

Es un gran placer poder mirar estas telas de cerca y tocarlas por fin! Me encanta todo lo que hace Claire, los colores que consigue tiñendo con diferentes plantas que ni siquiera conozco. Un mundo diferente para mí. Y, por supuesto, me encantan las obras de patchwork que hace con ellas. La simplicidad y, a la vez, la riqueza de sus composiciones y texturas me sirven de inspiración en mi trabajo.

Así que ahora estoy barajando diferentes ideas para hacer una obra con ellas. No suelo trabajar con telas tan valiosas, así que esta vez siento una ligera carga de responsabilidad... Tengo que hacer algo que las merezca...

I'll be on holidays for a few days soon. There will be no internet connection. Maybe a couple of programmed posts, but no comments or answers... Good for my brain, I think. I'm this kind of person who loves routine, but it's good to live different places, different lives, to come back with new energies...

What I hate most of travels is the energy that takes from me, not only to prepare everything, but just the idea of a coming change distorts me weeks before... So, it's weeks since I last did my last creative work. Nothing new lately... The last thing I did was finishing [loto], at last!

Today I realized I've lost my favoutite sewing notion, my pincushion ring. It is not the most beautiful or creative but I find it fits me perfectly, with the exact weight and size for my hand the tiny pins. And they don't sell it anymore!!! I know I can make something similar by myself (I'll try some day...) but it won't be the same.

I've been all the day looking for it at home, in drawers, bags, pockets and even underneath the furniture hoping that Catalina had played with it hiding it somewhere. But the only things found were all the toy mice that have disappeared lately...

'Before and after' in my studio. I almost forgot to take pictures of the 'before' but Sara, de The Fabric of Meditation, reminded it to me last minute. So, ignore all the clothes over the iroing table because they were out of the bedroom closet, where I was doing a redecoration too...

I was not too ambitious but practical. I just wanted more storage space, something easy to use and to mantain clean...

The other corner, with the window, the cutting table and sewing machine remains more or less the same.

I love the calm and cleanness the white gives and the closet for all the tech devices and wires and of course for my stash...!

[loto] is a work I started in 2009. I has always been influenced by japanese art and wanted to make something related to it. I found many inspiration in the book Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match and most ol all in Sri Threads blog. I love it!

That's why I decided to embroider the sashiko way on black fabric (the tradition is over indigo dyed fabric).

When I started it, I planned to use a fabric with a floral pattern instead of the orange, but then I was afraid that all these patterns together would be weird, and changed my mind... I was afraid of the risk...

Big mistake!!! I never liked it orange. So, almost to years later I decided to redo it with the original idea.

The last were the quilting and the binding. I used a really simple pattern to quilt by machine (I know, I know, maybe not a good idea...). Just some straight lines, wide separately, because I found it the best way to preserve the flexibility of the quilt, to avoid adding weight and not interfere with the design. I'm not really sure about it...

***Las últimas fueron fue el acolchado y el rematado. Utilicé un patrón realmente sencillo para acolchar a máquina (lo sé, lo sé, quizás no fue una buena idea...). Sólo algunas lineas rectas, muy separadas, porque me pareció la mejor manera de conservar la flexibilidad de la colcha, evitar añadir peso y no interferir con el diseño. No estoy demasiado segura...

The last but one part of the work: to join all the blocks placing them on the back cloth. I did it by hand, with a blind stitch, and also used some hexagons and little blocks as junctions where I didnt't like the transitions. It was one of a nightmare to work with this large size. And, once more, I couldn't work with a loop. I never can...

In this case, pictures are more romantic than reality. I always love to look at hands sewing, even if they are mine!

Según las pruebas que he hecho, para los usuarios de Blogger, la más fácil es esta última, poniendo como OpenID URL la dirección del blog y luego el nombre que queremos que salga (mirad la foto de abajo).

When everything works, maybe it's better not to touch it, but I couldn't help to play with my blog. I have activated a new external service, Disqus, that allows us to comment and reply comments directly. I'm going to try it for a while and see how it works. Please, let me know if you find any problems or if you like/dislike it.

As always, you can comment as a Guest, with a mail or URL or with accounts like Google, Facebook, Typepad, OpenID... The easiest way I found for Blogger users seems to be the OpenID. OpenID URL is your blog adress and you can choose your name (see picture above).

I'm obsessed with finishing projects lately, mending some cloths, and all those kind of things you always have to do at home but never find the time to do. And I have to say that my "to do list" has progressed a lot:

And this is the diaper changer I made for my first nephew, whom we hope for within weeks. With the fabric leftover I also made a bag to carry all the stuff that is needed.

I first tried this technic of writing with the sewing machine. I know I will work with if often in the future...

On the other hand, I urgently need some decoration changes at home, and IKEA has broken in my life this weekend (only details, by the moment).

This is the chair I told you days ago. Already finished. It looks more or less the same, but I have made some sewing repairs that you don't see, though they make it easier to remove the cover and wash it. I've also covered some parts thar were broken and scratched. As Catalina the Cat loves to sit here, I've also added one of my old quilts that I was using for another purpose, and I think it looks good here.

Nothing too important but two days of work. That's how it is!

***Esta es la butaca de la que hablaba el otro día. Al fin terminada. Está más o menos igual, pero he hecho algunos arreglillos de costura que, aunque no se ven, hacen más fácil quitar la funda para lavarla. También he arreglado algunas partes que estaban un poco rotas o arañadas. Como parece que va a ser la silla de Cata, he acabado poniendo uno de mis antiguos quilts que estaba usando para otra cosa, pero que creo que aquí queda ideal.

No es nada del otro mundo, pero me ha llevado dos días hacerlo. Así son estas cosas!

I've been thinking about what to do with this chair. It has been Cata's favourite place lately and the upholstery is starting to loose it's whiteness... So, I'm trying a new "styling". [Edelweiss] looks good on it but I'm afraid it must leave... The faux-fur cloth remains!
